Australian South Sea Islanders Who Served PDF Print E-mail

madassis_frontpageIn 1996, an honour roll was placed in the Gardens of Memories, beside the Australian South Sea Islander Meeting Hut @ the Lagoons, to commemorate the Australian South Sea Islanders who served in World War I, World War II, Malaya, Borneo and Vietnam. Each year MADASSIA has held a memorial service, lead by Father Henry Kennell, to acknowledge and to remember the service the men gave for Australia.

Over the past few years there has been a surgence of interest in ANZAC Day with many of the younger generations asking about the service of members from the South Sea Islander commuity and where did we fit into Australia's history at war.

A display of memrobilia has been place in the Mackay City Library for public viewing until the 8th May 2009. Also part of this project is Saturday Night @ the Movies. The theme for the movie night is "War" and old black and white movies are shown at the Australian South Sea Islander Meeting Hut @ the Lagoons starting at 7pm. Entry is FREE. Here are the following dates: 28 March, 4 April, 18 April and 25 April.

Saturday 25th April there will be a memorial service held at The Hut beginning at 3:00pm. A bar-b-que and the last movie night will follow the service. All welcome.
